Review Process Undertaken by ACRE in Assessing Release Applications

The following flow chart illustrates the life cycle of a deliberate release application from the point of view of its assessment by ACRE.

After an initial assessment by ACRE almost all applications are returned to the applicants for clarification or the addition of further data to support the risk assessment. For many applications the cycle of ACRE assessment and request for further information is repeated several times.

The process leads to three possible outcomes: (i) the application is withdrawn by the applicant in the light of ACRE's comments; (ii) ACRE recommends that the application is rejected; or, (iii) ACRE recommends consent is granted, with conditions and monitoring requirements.

After consent is granted ACRE also considers information that results from monitoring and further assesses the release.
