Multi-objective flood management demonstration project

In an initiative to promote working with natural processes and land management to alleviate flood risk, Defra is making available a total grant of £500,000 to contribute towards one or two demonstration projects.

Any organisation or partnership with the capacity to deliver such a project is invited to submit an outline proposal to Defra by 29th August 2008. Outline proposals will be assessed and one or two projects selected for a more detailed feasibility study before the funding is committed. We will contact applicants by 30th September to confirm whether we will support the development of a more detailed business case with a view to making an announcement on the preferred project(s) early in 2009.

Aim of the project

To demonstrate how land management changes can contribute to reducing flood risk at the same time as delivering a range of other benefits.  

Eligibility criteria

Projects must meet all the above criteria.

In the first instance eligible organisations or partnerships are invited to submit a brief proposal of no more than 4 pages, plus maps and illustrations. Your submission must clearly explain how your proposal will meet each of the above criteria. It should also include an description of the proposed work, an initial assessment of the likely costs Applications should be sent by email or post to the address below, to arrive no later than 29th August 2008.

The project will be overseen by a Steering Group including Defra, the Environment Agency and Natural England.

Eligible organisations or partnerships

  • Any organisation or partnership which considers that it has the capacity to deliver the proposed project may apply.
  • Partnerships may include public bodies and groups of individuals.
  • Partnerships should identify a lead organisation which would be responsible for delivering the project.
