DescriptionCurrently, flood risk from rivers and the sea are mapped in order to inform the public and other authorities so that they are in better position to manage those risks. On the other hand, very limited information is available on the risk from coastal erosion. Through this project we will identify appropriate means to develop our coverage in order to model and map the risks from coastal erosion by reviewing ongoing best practice. We will undertake consultation and pilot studies to examine and review different approaches to assessing these risks and presenting the outputs in order to develop the coverage and reliability of our risk mapping information. The Environment Agency will consider how best to incorporate coastal erosion risk information into their existing flood risk mapping strategy in order to improve awareness and understanding, particularly in the development of Shoreline Management Plans (SMPs) and for the public at risk, land use planners and developers. This will enable a proactive approach to managing risks for both existing and new developments.
