Guidance for Operating Authorities
Defra produces policy guidance for operating authorities to inform their decision making on a range of policy issues. The following guidance is currently available:
- Coastal Squeeze
: Guidance on the appraisal and assessment of their plans and projects in areas where there is an ongoing loss of habitat in European sites due to a combination of flood risk management and sea level rise.
- Environmental Impact Assessment: Details of the regulations and guidance on their application.
- Managed Realignment: Land Purchase/Compensation: Guidance on the circumstances in which land purchase and financial compensation for managed realignment of river or coastal flood defences can be funded from the Defra flood management budget under current legislation.
- Project Appraisal: Integrated suite of guidance on all aspects of project appraisal.
- Shoreline Management Plans: Guidance on the preparation of second generation Shoreline Management Plans
- Strategic Environmental Assessment: Guidance to Operating Authorities on the application of Strategic Environmental Assessment to flood management plans and programmes.
- Uneconomic Sea Defences
: Paper clarifying policy on the approach to be taken where there is insufficient economic justification for continuing to maintain seawalls.
- Water Level Management Plans: Guidance on the production of Water Levels Management Plans
