Flood and Coastal Management Conference

The annual Flood and Coastal Management Conference was first held in the wake of the 1953 floods as a means of encouraging information exchange on technical matters between the Department responsible for policy and the then Catchment Boards and is now a leading event for flood and coastal management professionals.

The conference has been extended to cover a broader range of interests centred on the management of river and coastal flood risks and coastal erosion, including new techniques, examples of best practice and the outputs of the Defra / Environment Agency Joint Research and Development Programme. It regularly attracts over 400 delegates and exhibitors from across the sector including representatives from local and central government, flood and coastal erosion risk management operating authorities, consultancies, industry, environmental charities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Since 2007 the conference has been promoted jointly with the Environment Agency to reflect the split between policy responsibility (Defra) and the strategic overview of, and significant responsibility for, delivery (Environment Agency). Detailed management of the conference has passed to the Agency, overseen by a joint Defra / Environment Agency Conference Management Board.
