Background

Making space for water identified the need to explore a greater range of delivery mechanisms for flood and coastal erosion risk management, with a view to developing more sustainable approaches which maximise the environmental, social and economic benefits achieved and which may also deliver wider benefits.

The Innovation Fund seeks to improve future delivery of flood and coastal erosion risk management, by bringing in ideas from a wider range of stakeholders, and promoting innovative approaches to delivery that contribute towards the development of more holistic and sustainable policy making in the future.

The available fund is £1.5 million over a three year period. The Fund was advertised by Defra seeking tenders from organisations through an open competition, and a steering group comprised of Defra and the Environment Agency made recommendations to the Minister of State for Climate Change & Environment who announced his final decision on 4 January 2007. At the end of the three year period a review of all the projects will be carried out, including recommendations for further consideration.

The results of these projects will be important for influencing the development of future policy and delivery.
