Defra's strategy documents
During 2006/7 Defra revisited its priorities, ways of working and organisational structures. It has become clear through this process that the overarching challenge for Defra is to enable everyone to live within our environmental means. Our priorities have been formalised in the Comprehensive Spending Review 2007, and this has led to two Defra led Public Service Agreements and a new set of Departmental Strategic Objectives for the Department.
In 2006, David Miliband wrote to the then Prime Minister setting out the challenges faced by Defra and the Government following his appointment as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The Department published its five year strategy in 2004, covering the following five years and beyond. It shows our plans to take forward our five strategic priorities.
Our Strategy 03-06 described our plans to take forward the 2002 spending review settlement - it addressed the practicalities of the long-term plan set out in Defra's prospectus.
Defra's prospectus, Working for the essentials of life (PDF, 1.23 MB NB large file) was developed in 2001 to explain our work in protecting the essentials of life: air, land, water and food. It set out our vision for the future, and since then we have made considerable progress in making that vision a reality.
