Broadcast air-assisted sprayers: a step-by-step guide to reducing aquatic buffer zones (Local Environment Risk Assessment for Pesticides [ LERAP])
This booklet, issued by Defra and the Pesticides Safety Directorate (PSD),
assumes that all necessary planning for the crop, spray operation and
product selection has been done in advance, and that requirements of the
Green Code (see next item) are followed throughout. It applies to broadcast
air-assisted sprayers only - different rules apply to horizontal boom
sprayers.

Code of practice for using plant protection products
Prepared jointly by Defra, the Health & Safety Commission (HSC) and the National Assembly for Wales Environment, Planning and Countryside Department
This Code of Practice is for all professional users of plant protection products in England and Wales in respect of Part III of the Food and Environment Protection Act 1985 (FEPA) and the regulations controlling pesticides, particularly plant protection products, under that part of the Act. From 15 December 2005 it replaces the following three previous codes of practice:
- the Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Pesticides on Farms and Small Holdings ("the Green Code")
- the Code of Practice for the use of Approved pesticides in Amenity Areas and Industrial Areas ("the Orange Code") a voluntary code produced by the National Association of Agricultural Contractors and the British Agrochemical Association
- those parts of the Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Pesticides for Non-Agricultural Purposes - The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 ("the Blue Code") which deal with forestry.
The Code’s statutory basis means that it can be used in evidence if people are taken to Court for offences involving pesticides. The code is available to download in pdf format on the Pesticides Safety Directorate website.

Official Group on OPs: report to Ministers
The report of a high-level group of officials from MAFF and the Department
of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR), Department of Health
(DH), Ministry of Defence (MOD), Cabinet Office (CO), Scottish Office
(SO), Welsh Office (WO), Northern Ireland Office (NIO), Health and Safety
Executive (HSE), Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), Pesticides Safety
Directorate (PSD) and the Medicines Control Agency (MCA). The Group was
formed after Ministers in the departments involved decided to review all
the issues relevant to the safety and control of organophosphorous (OP)
products. Ministers wished in particular to be assured that there was
effective co-ordination between the many Departments and Agencies of Government
involved, to ensure that questions were examined from all angles, and
that decisions were taken in full knowledge of all relevant information
held by Government.

Pesticide poisoning of animals 2002: investigations
of suspected incidents in the United Kingdom.
A report of the Environmental Panel of the Advisory Committee on Pesticides
In the UK the Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme investigates deaths
of wildlife, including beneficial insects, pets and some livestock, where
there is strong evidence to suggest that pesticide poisoning may be involved.
The Environmental Panel provides advice to the Advisory Committee on Pesticides
(ACP) on environmental problems relating to pesticides. This annual report
covers incidents in 2002 arising from the approved use of pesticides,
accidental or wilful misuse and deliberate abuse, and also gives details
of consequent enforcement action taken under the Food and Environment
Protection Act, 1985 and other legislation.

Pesticide Usage Survey Reports
The Advisory Committee on Pesticides advises government on all aspects of pesticide use, including regular monitoring of the usage of all pesticides. Accurate data is needed on the usage of individual pesticides, including trends in usage. All surveys of pesticide usage in agriculture and horticulture are now fully coordinated by the Pesticide Usage Survey Groups of the Central Science Laboratory (CSL), an executive agency of Defrfa, and of the Scottish Agricultural Science Agency, an agency of the Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department (SERAD). The two survey groups now present combined reports of pesticide usage throughout Great Britain.

Pesticides and integrated farm management
Pesticides help farmers and growers to produce a constant and economic
supply of produce for the market. Pesticides are used to protect crops
from pests, diseases and weeds, but when using pesticides you must be
aware of the possible effect they may have on people's health and the
environment. The most effective way you can respond to these concerns
is by using integrated farm management (IFM) techniques on your farm,
which involve combining traditional and modern farming practices with
measures that protect the environment. This booklet explains some methods
of husbandry that could form part of an IFM system on your holding, and
aims to help you make informed decisions about when to use pesticides
and to guide you towards other sources of help. (This is a new edition
of Pesticides and integrated farming (MAFF, 1996, PB2489), which
it replaces.)
