Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) 1 inch maps
The provisional Agricultural Land Classification maps for England and Wales were first published at a scale of 1 inch to 1 mile (1:63,360) and were designed to give strategic advice on the distribution of land quality to planning authorities. Subsequently maps were also published at scales of 1:250,000 and 1:625,000. Although it was explained that the 1:63,360 maps were only "provisional" and intended for strategic use (being accurate at best to 80 hectares) they have often been used for site specific purposes. A number of the 1 inch maps are now out of print. In view of this and because of the potential for mis-use, the 1 inch to 1 mile ALC maps have now been withdrawn from sale. The 1:250,000 maps contain over 90% of the data which appears on the 1 inch series, and are more appropriate for the strategic planning use originally intended.
