Air quality
Air quality and climate change: a UK perspective (available on this site)
This is the third report of the Air Quality Expert Group (AQEG). The report draws together the most up-to-date research on the linkages between climate change and air quality. It examines the scientific background to these interactions and identifies synergies, where measures to improve air quality can help to ameliorate climate change, and trade-offs where policy measures in the two areas act in opposition

Climate change
Climate change and agriculture in the United Kingdom
There is increasing evidence that global warming is caused by human activity
and that climate change is likely to continue. This publication summarises
the results of 7 years of MAFF research on the impacts of climate change
compiled by a group of 13 research organisations and explains the likely
implications for the agricultural industry. It provides information on
the new climatic and market conditions that may be experienced and enables
farmers to consider strategies that will maintain or enhance their ability
to anticipate climate change in their decision-making and take steps to
reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

Energy: sustainable energy
This section includes publications on energy efficiency, combined heat and power (CHP) and fuel poverty
The Government's strategy for combined heat and power to 2010 (available on this site)
Combined Heat and Power (CHP), the simultaneous generation of heat and
power, is a highly efficient way to use both fossil and renewable fuels.
CHP can therefore make a significant contribution to the UKs sustainable
energy goals, bringing environmental, economic, social and energy security
benefits. This strategy document sets out a framework to support the growth
of CHP capacity in the UK and to enable the CHP industry to meet the challenges
ahead.

Noise
Bothered by noise? (available on this site)
This booklet gives you useful information
on how to deal with noise problems.
It is a fact of life that we all make noise:
whether we are talking to others, playing
music, entertaining, driving in our cars or
just going about our daily business. What
is a noise to one person may be pleasurable
to another. But too much noise can reduce
people's quality of life and, in some extreme
cases, even destroy it entirely.
If noise is upsetting your life, this booklet
can show you ways you may be able to deal
with the problem.

21 of the Groundwater Regulations 1998 and applies in England and Wales
but not in Scotland.

Groundwater protection code: solvent use and storage (available on this site)
Under the Groundwater Regulations 1998, Ministers may approve codes of
practice for activities which could result in the pollution of groundwater.
This code aims to provide a framework of advice, rather than to be a prescriptive
list of procedures to be followed in all circumstances. In order to be
helpful to smaller businesses, however, self-contained sections (covering
activities such as handling, storage and disposal of solvents) set out
fairly detailed lists of actions which may need to be considered when
deciding how best to avoid groundwater pollution. It is up to the user
to follow the guidance, or take other measures, to ensure that the Groundwater
Regulations are complied with in a specific case.
The code is not intended to cover health and safety issues or aspects
of environmental protection other than groundwater. It does not, therefore,
replace any codes or guidance addressing such matters.

Guidance note for the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001 (available on this site)
Provides background information and interpretation of the minimum legal
standards in the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations
2001 in more detail, and outline recommended 'best practice' measures
that go beyond the requirements in the legislation. It is not a substitute
for the Statutory Instrument and is not intended to have legal force.
It should be read by all organisations with members who have custody or
control of oil storage facilities (including tanks, intermediate bulk
containers, oil drums and mobile bowsers), with certain exceptions listed
in paragraph 8 of the guidance note. Those affected are mainly those storing
oil above ground, with a 200 litre lower limit to storage capacity, on

Waste management - the duty of care: a code of practice (available on this site)
The duty of care is a law which says that you must take all reasonable
steps to keep waste safe. If you give waste to someone else, you must
be sure they are authorised to take it and can transport, recycle or dispose
of it safely. If you break this law, you can be fined an unlimited amount.
The duty of care applies to anyone who produces or imports, keeps or stores,
transports, treats or disposes of waste. It also applies if you act as
a broker and arrange these things.

Controlling soil erosion
Soil erosion is caused by the action of water, wind, grazing animals and human activity. It can affect the profitability of farm businesses, damage the environment and cause a public nuisance. These booklets complement advice given in the Codes of good agricultural practice for the protection of air, soil and water.
NB The two booklets below are only available in downloadable pdf format on this site:
Controlling soil erosion: a manual for the assessment and management of agricultural land at risk of water erosion in lowland England Revised September 2005
Controlling soil erosion: incorporating former advisory leaflets on grazing livestock, wind, outdoor pigs and the uplands Revised September 2005
