Golden rules for a healthy flock: advice on restocking sheep flocks
Purchasing replacements and mixing of sheep from several sources can
bring new disease onto the farm. Restocking provides an ideal opportunity
to exclude many of the diseases that affect sheep and therefore improve
the health, welfare and profitability of your flock. The purpose of these
advisory notes is to provide information on how to try to prevent buying
in infection into new flocks when restocking, whether you are purchasing
replacements or establishing a completely new flock fter losing animals
to FMD.

Golden rules for a healthy herd: advice on restocking cattle herds
The re-stocking and replenishment of herds affected by the Foot and Mouth
Disease outbreak requires careful planning. Unplanned re-stocking risks
introducing a number of economically important and distressing diseases,
which will put at risk the investment in new stock and those on neighbouring
farms. The purpose of this leaflet is to remind farmers of the risks and
the ways in which those risks can be managed. A structured approach involving
your veterinary surgeon is recommended.

Johne's disease in dairy herds (available on this site)
Guidance on control of Johne’s disease in dairy herds
Johne‘s disease is an infectious wasting condition of cattle and other ruminants, closely related to the organism that causes tuberculosis. Affected animals eventually and inevitably die. In dairy herds, the presence of Johne’s disease will significantly reduce milk yields well before other signs of the disease can be found. Although not a notifiable disease in Great Britain, Johne’s disease is notifiable in Northern Ireland. This guidance is issued by Defra, the Department of Health, the Food Standards Agency, the Scottish Executive Environment & Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD), the Welsh Assembly Government, and the Department of Agriculture & Rural Development Northern Ireland (DARDNI).

Veterinary Products Committee (VPC) Working Group
on Feline and Canine Vaccination
Final report to the VPC
The Working Group was set up by the VPC in response to current concern
in both the public domain and in the scientific community about possible
health risks related to the routine vaccination of cats and dogs. It concluded
that, although adverse reactions to vaccination, including lack of efficacy,
occasionally occur, the overall risk/benefit analysis strongly supports
the continued use of vaccination, which plays a very valuable role in
the prevention and control of the major infectious diseases in cats and
dogs.

Veterinary medicine
Government Veterinary Journal (formerly known as State Veterinary Journal)
The Government Veterinary Journal is an official journal of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and is the UK journal specialising in state veterinary medicine. It covers disease control, animal welfare, and public health and consumer protection and is distributed internally, externally and worldwide. It has been renamed to the Government Veterinary Journal (GVJ) to more accurately reflect that it is aimed principally at veterinary surgeons working in or alongside all Government Departments
The GVJ is published twice yearly, scheduled for June and December. As a result of the outbreaks of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) and Foot and Mouth Disease in GB in 2000 and 2001 respectively, only one edition, the CSF Special Edition was published in 2001. A further special edition, covering the FMD outbreak, was published in 2002 followed by the December 2002 edition.
All issues of the SVJ and GVJ since Vol 11, 2001 are available on this site at: www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/gvj/default.htm

Codes of recommendations for the welfare of livestock
These codes, which have the approval of Parliament, take account of five basic needs: (1) freedom from thirst, hunger and malnutrition; (2) appropriate comfort and shelter; (3) the prevention, or rapid diagnosis and treatment of injury, disease or infestation; (4) freedom from fear; (5) freedom to display most normal patterns of behaviour. Good stockmanship is a key factor in farm animal welfare, and these codes are essential reading for every stockman, since failure to observe their provisions might be relied upon by the prosecution as tending to establish guilt in any proceedings brought under Section1 of the Agriculture (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1968.
