About Defra

What risks we cover: Plant, pest and diseases

Plant inspectionDefra is responsible for co-ordinating the response to outbreaks of exotic plant pests and diseases eg Colorado Beetle, Sudden Oak Death etc.

This includes assessing the level of threat posed by the organism in question and the most efficient and effective way of minimising or eliminating the risk which it poses. Part of the response necessarily includes a communications strategy to ensure an appropriate amount of publicity in partnership with other stakeholders and international organisations as required.

Operational response to plant pest and disease outbreaks is undertaken regionally by the Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate (PHSI)

The Central Science Laboratory (CSL) provides laboratory diagnostic services and scientific advice including pest risk analysis and recommendations to support monitoring, eradication and containment activities.
