About Defra

What risks we cover: Dam failures

Dam and spillwayResponsibility for dam and reservoir safety ultimately lies with reservoir owners and managers (known as "Reservoir Undertakers").

A statutory requirement is placed upon the Reservoir Undertaker to employ a Supervising Engineer and an Inspecting Engineer from the panel of specialist engineers.

The Supervising Engineer's role is to keep the reservoir under expert observation and to be available at all hours to attend at any incident and advise on the remedial measures to be taken.
