Contingency planning management
This section explains how contingency planning in Defra is managed.
The Minister of State (Climate Change and the Environment) has oversight of contingency planning in Defra. An Annual Report is prepared for Ministers each November setting out progress in the delivery of Department’s Contingency Planning Strategy.
A Contingency Planning Board meets quarterly to advise and offer assurance to the Management Board and Ministers about Defra’s overall state of preparedness (1) to address emergencies and (2) to continue with its essential business in the face of any serious disruption to its staff or infrastructure.
Defra’s role is part of the wider Government Programme to ensure resilience in the face of a major disaster. For further information see the UK Resilience website.
Defra's Contingency Planning and Security Division represents Defra at a wide range of Cabinet Office cross government programmes, provides a secretariat for the Contingencies Planning Board and co-ordinates day to day contingency planning activities. Its functions are split into two areas:
