About Defra

Contingency Planning Board

In Defra a Contingency Planning Board has ownership of all contingency planning work in the Department.

The Board is comprised of Directors General or their designated representatives, and members from the Cabinet Office Civil Contingencies Secretariat, Department for Communities and Local Government, Environment Agency and an external, independent expert in contingency planning.

Through its governance the Board is responsible for taking a strategic view of the department's contingency planning responsibilities and for overseeing a programme to improve the Department's resilience.

The Board is chaired by the Director General of Service Transformation Group, who is also the Defra Management Board “Champion” for Contingency Planning. The Minister of State (Climate Change & Environment) is responsible for Contingency Planning in Defra.

Meetings

The Contingency Planning Board meets quarterly. The Board also deals with matters in correspondence.

Many of the issues discussed at the meetings are sensitive; minutes are not published.
