Consultation on managing radioactive waste safely: a framework for implementing geological disposal

The Government’s response to the independent Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) on 25 October 2006 committed to consult on how implementation of geological disposal of higher activity radioactive waste can be taken forward.

Following from that commitment, the UK Government and the Welsh and Northern Ireland devolved administrations have published a framework for the long term management of higher activity radioactive waste.  This was set out in the consultation document entitled “Managing Radioactive Waste Safely: a Framework for Implementing Geological Disposal”.

We sought views not only on the technical aspects of developing a disposal facility, but how we can engage most effectively with those communities that might have a potential interest in hosting the facility.

The document itself did not represent a call for communities to express an interest in hosting a geological disposal facility. Its purpose was to seek views on how Government should go about calling for expressions of interest, and how a geological disposal facility should be developed. It is about the process. A call for communities to express an interest will come later, once the responses to the consultation have been assessed and Government has published the White Paper in 2008.
