Consultation on the standardised reporting of radioactive discharges

Radioactive Substances Division
Area 4C Ergon House
17 Smith Square
London SW1P 3JR

22 August 2007

Dear consultee,

Public consultation on the standardised reporting of radioactive discharges

1. I am writing to invite views on the Government’s proposed approach to implementing a European Commission Recommendation on the standardisation of reporting radioactive discharges (2004/2/Euratom [1]).

2. The ultimate aim of the Recommendation is to standardise reporting across EU Member States, such that accurate and meaningful comparisons of discharges across the Community can be made. The UK's proposed approach to implementation of the Recommendation is intended to establish reporting requirements on a secure statistical basis, such that instances of over- and under-reporting of radioactive discharges are minimised and to ensure that the regulatory approach across the UK and industry is consistent.

3. The following documents may be found on Defra’s website at:

4. We welcome your responses on the specific questions that are asked in the body of the consultation document, and would be particularly interested in any information on the costs and benefits of the proposals. If you would like a hard copy of this consultation document please contact Tony Brown via our shared mailbox at limitsofdetection@defra.gsi.gov.uk.
