Consultation on proposals for welfare of racing greyhounds regulations
This consultation closed on 22 July 2009.
Defra has launched a consultation on the proposed introduction of regulations to promote the welfare of racing greyhounds which would be made under section 13 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
The purpose of this consultation is to seek your comments on the draft Statutory Instrument, draft guidance and other associated documentation. This consultation also asks for views on the likely costs and benefits to greyhound tracks and animal charities and rescues.
A summary of the responses to the consultation is provided below. We understand that the RSPCA initiated an email campaign on regulations for greyhound racing that generated a significant number of emails. Unfortunately, as none of these emails were submitted to Defra within the consultation period, it has not been possible to refer to these emails in the summary document. However, we would like to acknowledge here that a significant number of people took the time to register their view that there should be further regulations in this area.
