How do I report suspicion of mistreatment of animals?
Animal Health is responsible for monitoring, advising on and enforcing legislation relating to the welfare of animals reared for the production of food, wool, skin, or fur and for other commercial purposes. Our responsibilities do not extend to the welfare of animals bred or kept for sporting purposes or as pets (companion animals).
We primarily seek to ensure the welfare of such animals:
- on agricultural land;
- at the slaughter or killing of animals, other than in a licensed red meat or poultry slaughterhouse - this is the responsibility of the Meat Hygiene Service;
- during commercial transport;
- at markets.
Whilst Animal Health has enforcement responsibilities in these areas, primary responsibility for enforcement of the law rests with local authorities.
If you suspect that the welfare of farmed animals is being endangered you should contact your local Animal Health Divisional Office.
