National Salmonella Control Programme

Animal Health take or supervise the taking of official control samples from poultry flocks in line with the National Control Programme (NCP). The NCP aims to reduce the prevalence of Salmonella of public health significance in flocks of domestic fowl.

The National Control Programmes started with the breeding flocks NCP which began in January 2007. Followed by the laying flocks NCP in January 2008 and the broiler flocks in January 2009.
The National Control Programme for Turkeys is due to commence in January 2010

Under the

  • The Control of Salmonella in Poultry Orders (England) 2007
  • The Control of Salmonella in Poultry Orders (Wales) 2008
  • The Control of Salmonella In Poultry (Breeding, Laying and Broiler flocks) (Scotland)Order 2009
  • The Control of Salmonella in Broiler Flocks Order 2009 (England)
  • The Control of Salmonella in Broiler Flocks Order 2009 (Wales)

official control samples are required for breeding, laying and broiler flocks.

Official control samples can be collected in one of three ways –

  • Animal Health visit and collect the samples
  • Animal Health visit and supervise the collecting of samples
  • Animal Health may authorise another competent person to take the official samples under instruction.

Animal Health may authorise the collection of samples by another competent person on a risk assessed basis.
