Animal Welfare and International Trade
Ensuring high standards of farm animal welfare on farms, during transport and at market is also an important part of our work, and we investigate individual reports of poor welfare, working with livestock holders to ensure statutory requirements are met.We license the movement of animals involved in long-distance transport, and we license exports and facilitate imports. To protect GB from the import of disease we inspect imported livestock, poultry and other animals to ensure they are disease-free and we keep a track of where they are transported so they can be traced if necessary.
We are the licensing element of the UK Management Authority for CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) and are responsible for regulating trade in endangered species by issuing permits to allow their import, export and trade.
We also register certain birds kept in captivity, and protected under national legislation.
