Animal welfare: Live animal export statistics
Livestock exported from England to other EU Member States (excluding Ireland) for slaughter or further fattening - Summary of Animal Health Agency welfare in transport Enforcement Activity
Animals for export from England to other European Union countries for the purpose of slaughter and further fattening are carried on roll on - roll off ferries (Ro Ro) or specifically fitted livestock vessels, where the animals are unloaded from lorries and transported in the ship’s pens with access to feed and water. Before any specifically fitted vessel may be used to transport animals from England for the first time it is assessed, by Defra officials, for its suitability for the transport of animals. Subsequent checks are made to ensure that standards are maintained. In addition, a Defra official may accompany a sailing to assess the operation and condition of animals during the journey.
The following summary relates to the total exports of animals for slaughter or further fattening from December 1999. Animals are also exported for breeding, they are not included in these figures.
