Animal welfare: England Implementation Plan
The Animal Health and Welfare Strategy (AHWS) for Great Britain
(1.2 MB) said comparatively little on welfare. To give more detail on what the AHWS means for welfare, Defra published the Animal Welfare Delivery Strategy (AWDS) for England
(168 KB) in October 2007. The AWDS is consistent with the AHWS and reinforces the Government’s commitment to improve animal welfare standards, setting out 5 strategic goals (Section 3) to that end.
Defra wants to agree specific actions with stakeholders towards those goals. The various sectors covered in the England Implementation Plan have identified a range of welfare priorities and actions to address them. This will be the starting point to develop action plans for the AWDS.
At Defra’s request, the EIG is overseeing delivery of the AWDS and its action plan through an AWDS Subgroup, which includes representatives of the Farm Animal Welfare Council, the Companion Animal Welfare Council and the Zoos Forum. The Subgroup met for the first time on 8 February 2008 (the minutes are on the Subgroup webpages).
