Bovine TB: Research project summary
Project SE3030: Application of postgenomics to reveal the basis of virulence, pathogenesis and transmissibility of Mycobacterium bovis
Project duration: 5 years
This was a key project for Defra’s vaccine development programme.
The objective of the project was to apply a range of postgenomic approaches to develop rational strategies for defining novel targets for vaccines and diagnostics, and to increase the understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease.
The key outputs of the project included accelerated identification of novel antigens for improved diagnostics and subunit vaccines, increased understanding of the AN5 strain used to produce the current diagnostic reagent, improved understanding of the in vitro growth requirements of Mycobacterium bovis that will allow enhanced culture media for primary isolation.
The approaches and knowledge developed within the project will underpin future vaccine development.
