Bovine TB: Annual TB conference for Great Britain - 17 May 2007

3 CVO's of UK, Wales & Scotland. The second annual bovine TB conference for GB was held on 17 May 2007 in Church House Conference Centre, Westminster, London.  Building on from the first annual conference in 2006, the aim of this conference was to bring stakeholders up to date on developments in the past year, including the research programme, and provide opportunities for discussion.

Over 90 delegates attended the conference from a variety of viewpoints and backgrounds, including farming, veterinary, wildlife, the TB Advisory Group, Government, academics and auctioneers.

The programme Adobe PDF file (500 KB) for the day and speakers' presentations are available.

The Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) UK opened the Conference with an update on the current TB situation in GB. She was then joined by the CVOs for Wales and Scotland for an interview session, including an open question and answer session from delegates.

Simon MoreThis was followed by Professor Simon More from University College Dublin providing international insight into how bovine TB has been tackled in Ireland, Australia and Chile.

Further presentations were given on badger and cattle vaccine trials (Glyn Hewison, Veterinary Laboratories Agency) and developments in the use of gamma interferon testing (John Montague, Senior Veterinary Advisor, Defra).  The morning session concluded with a Central Science Laboratory presentation of video clips of badgers entering farm buildings.

Anton Lowe et alThe afternoon session began with a presentation from Andy Paterson (Defra Veterinary Advisor) on routes of bovine TB transmission.

This was followed by a case study from Anton Lowe of the Fenton Veterinary Practice about his involvement in the Wales Intensive Treatment Area (ITA) scheme and use of the scoring tool. He was then joined by Stephen James, a farmer from an ITA, and Andy Biggs from the British Cattle Veterinary Association for a question and answer session, which drew on Anton’s presentation.  This discussion included a focus on how stakeholders can work together to tackle TB.

Table discussionIn small groups, delegates discussed their conclusions from the day, before feeding them back to the rest of the room.

Keystone Marketing and Event Management Ltd organised and facilitated the conference and have produced a report Adobe PDF file (84 KB) of the day.  Please note that this report contains the views of stakeholders expressed on the day and does not present Government policy or views.

Feedback from the conference was positive and showed that delegates felt the event was worthwhile, productive and broadened their understanding.  Professor Simon More’s presentation was highlighted as being particularly useful and interesting.  A summary of the feedback from delegates can be found in the annex of the report.
