Requirements for importing cats from Australia and cats and dogs from Malaysia (Peninsula) into UK quarantine
Cats from Australia
An original health certificate is required for cats entering the UK from Australia. The certificate must confirm that the cat:
- has not been on a holding where Hendra disease has been confirmed in the 60 days prior to the animal’s departure for the UK.
The certificate must be completed by the Australian government veterinary services. It must accompany the cat to the UK and be handed to the authorised carrying agent who is to collect the cat from the port/airport of landing in the UK.
In order to enquire about arrangements to obtain the health certification, you will need to contact the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service on 00 6 2 62 71 66 16.
Dogs and cats from Malaysia (Peninsula)
The import into UK quarantine of dogs and cats from Malaysia (Peninsula) is prohibited unless health certification provided by the Malaysian veterinary authorities is provided which confirms that the cat or dog:
- has had no contact with pigs during at least the 60 days prior to export; and
- has not been resident on holdings where during the past 60 days any case of Nipah disease has been confirmed; and
- has been subjected with a negative result to an IgC capture ELISA test carried out in a laboratory approved for testing for antibody against the Nipah disease viruses by the competent veterinary authorities on a sample of blood taken within 10 days of export.
In order to enquire about arrangements for the test to be carried out and obtaining the health certification, you will need to contact the Malaysian veterinary authorities on 00 603 254 0762 / 00 603 254 0077. The original health certification must accompany the dog/cat to the UK and be handed to the authorised carrying agent nominated to collect the dog/cat from the port/airport of landing in the UK.
Dogs and cats transiting Australia or Malaysia (Peninsula)
Dogs and cats from other countries may transit Australia or Malaysia (Peninsula) by air without requiring the documents explained above provided they remain within the perimeter of an international airport while in those countries.
Pets from other parts of the world
From time to time outbreaks of disease occur around the world that necessitate additional measures being imposed on the importation of certain species from affected countries. Details of such measures will be explained on this website.
