PETS: Taking your ferret out of the UK to other listed countries

Non-EU listed countries

Ferrets being exported to listed countries outside the European Union (EU) must comply with the import conditions of those countries. You are advised to find out before you travel what import requirements apply to ferrets. Many countries require an Export Health Certificate and some an import licence. Other documents may also be required. Your pet can enter Gibraltar, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland with an EU pet passport.

Some countries require your pet to have been vaccinated against rabies within a specified period before its arrival, so you may have to get it vaccinated again before the booster is due.

Advice is available from your local Animal Health Divisional Office, or you should contact the authorities (e.g. the Embassy) of the appropriate country.

Jamaica

Please note that while Jamaica is listed as a qualifying country in the EU Regulation, the law of that country prevents their involvement in the Pet Travel Scheme and so PETS compliant animals are not able to travel to or from Jamaica at present.

Residence

If your ferret stays in another country it may become subject to that country’s rules on residence. You are advised to check with the authorities of the country what those rules are and what implications becoming resident will have for your pet. For example, some countries require certain resident pets to have an annual rabies vaccination.

If you want to return with your pet to the UK, you must meet the rules.
