Imports - OVS Note 08/36

Microscopy sampling of processed animal protein

Purpose

The purpose of the OVS Note is to revise advice on the sample size for microscopy testing.

Latest position

The latest edition of the BIP manual suggests a protocol to be used for collection of samples of processed animal protein to check for the presence of mammalian meat and bone meal.  The suggested sample size is 200g.  We have received further advice from Animal Health on this matter.  Animal Health has been advised by the FVO that a sample size of 500g should be used for microscopy checks.  Section 8.3 and Appendix R of the manual will be revised to include this advice at the next update (November/December 08).

Action for OVS
  • OVS should send 500g samples of processed animal protein for microscopy checks.
