Imports - OVS Note 08/30

Import of meat products from third countries.

Purpose

1.  To remind you of the required certification for meat products from third countries.

Background

2.  Commission Decision 2007/777/EC1 was published on 30 November 2007.  It provided for new health certificates for meat products and treated stomachs, bladders and intestines entering the Community from Third Countries.  The Decision repeals Decision 2005/432/EC (old Meat Products Decision).

3.  Article 7 of the Decision states that

’consignments for which veterinary certificates were issued before 1 May 2008 in accordance with the models established by Decision 2005/432/EC shall be accepted for import into the Community until 1 June 2008’.

4.  Competent authorities in exporting countries were given five months to ensure that the new certificates laid down in Decision 2007/777/EC are used.

5.  It has come to our attention that consignments have been presented at UK BIPs accompanied by certificates issued after 30 April which do not meet the new requirements.

Action for OVSs

6.  Any consignment that is presented at BIP accompanied by health certificates signed on or after 1 May using the ‘old’ certificates should be rejected.
