International trade: Handling and disposal of International Catering Waste (ICW)

Catering waste which is unloaded from vessels which operate outside of European Union member states is subject to waste management controls. This is to prevent any possible transmission of disease from animal by-products, such as Foot and Mouth disease, to animals in the UK.

International catering waste is treated as a category one waste, and subject to strict controls on how it should be handled and disposed of. We have published guidance on the handling and disposal of international catering waste which is now available.

If you have any questions not answered by the guidance please contact us.
