Outbreak of Classical Swine Fever in Slovakia

Purpose

1.         To advise you of an outbreak Classical Swine Fever (CSF) in Slovakia and the action taken to prevent spread of the disease.

Background

2.         The European Commission has taken measures in respect of movement of pigs and genetic material of pigs from Slovakia.  Commission Decision 2008/303/EC concerning interim protection measures relating to Classical Swine Fever in Slovakia was published today.

3.         The Decision bans the movement from the whole of Slovakia of:

  • live pigs;
  • porcine semen; and
  • ova and embryos of swine

4.         This is an interim measure which is subject to review at the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health.

5.         We will keep you informed of developments.
