International trade: Customer Information Notes - GEN/08/63
Animal movement workshop - 7/8 February 2008
1. This Customer information Note is to inform you of the outcomes from the recent workshop about animal movements which was held on 7-8 February 2008 at Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire.
2. The main purpose for the workshop was to help improve the understanding for those involved in work associated with intra Community trade in animals which are covered by the EU Balai Directive 92/65 and in particular those that move animals between premises ‘approved’ under Article 13 of that Directive.
3. The event was very well attended by almost 100 people from various different organisations. Speakers from Defra and Animal Health gave presentations on the following areas:
- Role of Head Office
- Role of Animal Health
- TRACES Certification
- UK animal movement controls in peace time and during a disease outbreak
- Balai Directive 92/65/EEC and its application throughout Member States
- CITES policy, certification and licensing process and ports of entry
- Rabies– update on policy review
- Bluetongue movement rules
- Animal welfare during transport
- Imports from third countries: Commission Proposal for new rules for imports of animals under the Balai Directive.
4. These presentations and the notes from the Question and Answer sessions will shortly be available on the Defra website via a new webpage. Additionally, there is also a link to the notes of the quarterly meetings held between Defra, BIAZA, BALPPA and Zoos.
