SGDIA: Preliminary on The Surveillance Group on Diseases and Infections of Animals (SGDIA) meeting on 18 October 2005

The Surveillance Group on Diseases and Infections of Animals (SGDIA) met in London on 18 October. The meeting was chaired by Defra’s Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Fred Landeg.

The SGDIA received updates on Avian Influenza :

  • Surveillance in domestic poultry and wild birds to detect Avian Influenza viruses of subtypes H5 and H7;
  • An update on international surveillance for the H5N1 strain and the situation in other countries;
  • An update from Department of Heath.

The SGDIA was also updated on progress in implementing the UK Veterinary Surveillance Strategy, in particular:

  • recent progress in developing an innovative IT system - Rapid Analysis and Detection of Animal-related Risk (RADAR) which is currently in the Phase 2 solution outline stage;
  • the establishment of a pilot Veterinary Surveillance Network in the dairy sector in North Yorkshire, which involves a number of co-operating private veterinary practices;
  • starting a new project to develop unified procedures within the Animal Health and Welfare directorate for making decisions on the priorities for expenditure, based upon risk analyses.

The SGDIA discussed some other current topics, including:

A) Setting up a UK -wide prevalence survey for Johne’s Disease in dairy herds. Sampling and laboratory procedures will be field tested early next year before the survey is carried out.
B) A review of progress on the programme of standardisation of laboratory tests between veterinary and public health laboratories.
