Surveillance Group on Diseases and Infections of Animals (SGDIA)

The SGDIA has been set up to co-ordinate the Agriculture Departments’ and the Food Standards Agency's programmes of surveillance of animal health and welfare on farms, including pathogens of both animal and human health significance.

The Group met for the first time on 9 February 1999 under the Chairmanship of Jim Scudamore, then Chief Veterinary Officer. SGDIA is now chaired by Debby Reynolds, the current Chief Veterinary Officer.

Why was it set up?

The Group was established by Jeff Rooker, then Minister of State at MAFF (now Defra) to co-ordinate programmes of surveillance of animal health and welfare on farms. It anticipated the proposed joint FSA/Agriculture Departments committee for the surveillance and control of pathogens in live animals which was proposed in the Food Standards Agency White Paper.

Ministers have endorsed its terms of reference and agreed that its papers should be freely available.

What is the Group?

The Group brings together the four Agricultural Departments of the United Kingdom, the Department of Health, the Food Standards Agency and the Public Health Laboratory Service.
