Dog and Cat Travel And Risk Information (DACTARI)

On 1 March 2003 Defra launched DACTARI (Dog and Cat Travel and Risk Information). This national voluntary reporting scheme was set up to find out about the occurrence of exotic diseases in dogs and cats in Great Britain.

The scheme has been established by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) with the involvement of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) and the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA). Guidance has also been received from the Department of Health. Defra is responsible for administering the scheme.

Results are available and are regularly updated. They are also published regularly in the veterinary press.

The scheme intends to report any exotic diseases of dogs and cats, but focuses on four main ones

All of these can have severe consequences in your animal; some can also cause disease in humans.
