Surveillance Reports - Endemic Animal Disease Surveillance

Information on the prevalence and changing trends in the endemic diseases of farmed livestock, birds (poultry, waterfowl and gamebirds) and wildlife (including wild birds) is provided by the Endemic Disease and Animal Welfare Programme of the Veterinary Laboratories Agency.

The programme aims to provide for Defra and other stakeholders a targeted assessment of the current diseases status of farmed livestock and birds in England and Wales (Disease information in Scotland is provided by the Scottish Agricultural Colleges Veterinary Science Division) and to warn of potential risks from changing disease trends or new diseases. It also monitors any welfare issues resulting from changes in husbandry practice or the emergence of new diseases. The project provides information, which assists in supporting declarations of GB wide clearance for exotic non-notifiable diseases.

The principal outputs of this programme are a series of disease surveillance reports which are published on this website.

Disease Surveillance Reports

These reports monitor trends in the major endemic diseases and utilise the farmfile and VIDA (Veterinary Investigation Disease Analysis) databases. They are compiled using disease data gathered by the network of 15 Regional Laboratories and two Disease Surveillance Centres based at Liverpool University (Leahurst campus) and the Royal Veterinary College (Hawkshead campus) which carry out disease investigation in the field.

Defra funds the production of scanning surveillance reports for endemic diseases of farmed species and wildlife in England and Wales. These include:

Similar reports for Scotland can be found on the Scottish Agricultural College website.
