Rabies: Contingency Plan
Defra follows its generic contingency plan should classical rabies be identified in animals. The Rabies Disease Control Strategy
The Rabies Disease Control Strategy
(74 KB) outlines certain disease scenarios for an outbreak of rabies.
It covers the broad control strategies for these scenarios and the rationale
for such strategies. As such it underpins the disease control policies
summarised in the draft Rabies Contingency Plan. The format of this document
may change in the light of experience.
Provisional Disease Profile for Rabies
As part of implementing the Veterinary Surveillance Strategy (VSS), Defra has developed a series of "profiles" of animal diseases. A profile consists of a set of tables containing specified information in a common format. They are designed to be held in a database, so that users may extract standard or customised reports to meet their own needs, containing comparable information for any disease of interest. For instance, a report might extract from all relevant profiles the details of animal health legislation about vector-borne zoonotic diseases, or current surveillance for viral disease of cattle. Alternatively a report could present selected information from a single profile. Under the Animal Health and Welfare Strategy such profile summaries will provide core briefing material, e.g. to inform policy development.
As part of the quality assurance which is integral to the VSS, each profile will be "validated" by a process of peer review before publication on the database. This will ensure that as far as possible the information in the profiles is widely accepted as authoritative.
