19 April 2007 - A final report of the epidemiological findings (2.1 MB) by the National Emergency Epidemiology Group, Defra, on the outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 Avian Influenza in Suffolk, January 2007, has been published. A news release has been published.

12 March 2007 - The control measures put in place to tackle the H5N1 outbreak in Suffolk change as of 00:01am on Monday the 12 March 2007. The Declaration made on 1 March 2007 is revoked and the measures applicable in the Surveillance Zone and Restricted Zone by virtue of that Declaration are ended.

Restrictions continue to apply to meat produced from poultry originating in the Protection Zone. Some conditions may continue to apply to day old chicks and ready-to-lay poultry that were moved from premises within the Protection Zone and Surveillance Zone to premises outside the Protection Zone/Surveillance Zone.

Following the Secretary of State's statement on 5 February 2007 in the House of Commons he has written to several MPs to clarify points made in his statement. Here are extracts from these letters.

7 February 2007 - While epidemiological investigations are being carried out shooting, hunting or scaring activities using guns, bangers or gas canisters which create a noise and cause dispersal of wild bird populations are restricted in the protection zone and surveillance zone around the infected premises in Suffolk.

The restrictions on shooting, hunting or scaring activities which cause dispersal of wild bird populations in the PZ and SZ will be reviewed in light of further epidemiological investigations. Further information..

5 February 2007 - Defra's Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Fred Landeg has confirmed that at 20.36 on Monday 5 February the culling operation was completed. He said, "I am thankful for the efforts of all involved in the culling operation and the swiftness with which this large process was carried out."

9 January 2007 - The Department of Health is offering flu vaccination this winter to those who work in close contact with poultry. This is being done as a precautionary public health measure and does not mean that workers are at any higher risk of getting flu this winter than usual. Nor does it mean that there is an increased risk of an outbreak of bird flu in the UK as this risk remains low.
