  • New licences: EXD482(BT)(E) - General licence for the movement of ruminant animals out of a Bluetongue Protection Zone or a Bluetongue Surveillance Zone other than for movement to free areas outside England or Wales or for export and EXD483(BT)(E) - General licence for the movement of cattle or sheep out of a Bluetongue Protection Zone or a Bluetongue Surveillance Zone including movements to free areas outside England or for export.

Today Defra announced the extension of the Bluetongue Surveillance Zone into Cornwall and that the vector free period would end at 23:59 on 15 March 2008. If livestock keepers wish to move their animals before the end of the vector free period, they should ensure they leave enough time to carry out pre-movement testing of their animals, receive negative results, and move the animals before 23:59 on 15 March. Government is working closely with a core group of industry stakeholders to decide on actions necessary to combat Bluetongue disease. To this end a policy statement and supporting rationale and economic assessment has been agreed . This sets out the strategy and priorities for the winter period. The UK remains committed to a disease control approach which aims to contain disease within the current restricted zones.

  • Declaration of a Protection Zone and Surveillance Zone (PDF) (307 KB) - This declaration amends the Bluetongue Protection Zone to extend it slightly in two areas in Cambridgeshire. These are small extensions to address specific welfare issues, specifically to allow movement of animals off the Nene Marsh to their home farms.

Please note that the 'Bluetongue Protection Zone' has now replaced the 'Bluetongue Control Zone', and the 'Bluetongue Surveillance Zone' has now replaced the 'Bluetongue Protection Zone'. Together they are called the 'Bluetongue Restricted Zone'. The Zone boundaries have not changed. Some movement licences have additional conditions. Check the licence conditions carefully to ensure you comply with them all.
