Key current information

Guidance

Foot and mouth disease is an infectious disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, in particular cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, camelids and deer. There were eight confirmed cases of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in a very localised area in south-east of England in August and September 2007.

Following extensive surveillance work, veterinary risk assessment PDF Document (33 KB) and there having been no further cases of FMD discovered, from 31 December 2007 all remaining movement restrictions relating to FMD-susceptible animals and trade within the EU were lifted.
