FMD: Guidance note for statutory agencies and others who have a need to visit farm premises

FMD Protection and Surveillance Zones

During the FMD outbreak, visits should not be made to livestock farms in these zones (see map on the Defra website for the latest information on zones) unless there are exceptional reasons or an emergency. If a visit is necessary then there must be strict adherence to the Defra biosecurity guidance, a copy of which is attached.

Rest of the country

Outside these zones, to all intents and purposes it is ‘business as usual’. In all cases, the biosecurity guidance should be followed.

Where visits to livestock farms are required, farmers will inevitably have concerns about the risk of transmission of disease and these will need to be dealt with sensitively.

Any queries should be directed to the Defra helpline on 08459 33 55 77 which is currently operating between 9am - 5pm, 5 days a week.
