Transposition of the Meat Hygiene Council Directive 2002/99/EC into English law

Article 3 and 4 of the Meat Hygiene Council Directive 2002/99/EC provides that fresh meat, meat products, milk and milk products from animals from Protection Zones and Surveillance Zones cannot be placed on the domestic market, traded with other EU States or exported from the EU unless it has been treated with an approved treatment.

EC Decision 2007/118/EC, however, allows poultry meat from birds from Newcastle Disease Protection and Surveillance Zones to be sold to the domestic market only without treatment, subject to certain conditions.

A consultation on transposing these requirements into English law was undertaken by Defra between January and April 2007. Key documents relating to this consultation are available on-line. Devolved Administration's were responsible for their own transposition.
