Animal by-products: Collectors

There are a large number of collectors in the UK who collect and transport animal by-products (ABPs). A list is available at www.yell.com (search for either ‘animal by-products' or 'animal by-product collectors’).

Waste - Duty of Care leaflet (pdf - 217 KB)Transporters of ABPs will generally need to be registered as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency (if located in England and Wales) and with SEPA (if located in Scotland), under the Controlled Waste (Registration of Carriers and Seizures of Vehicles) Regulations 1991. There is an exception in the Regulations for operators of premises approved under the Animal By-Products Regulations. Operators who transport only animal by-products produced on their own premises do not need to be registered under the waste carrier Regulations. However those who transport catering waste do require such registration.

To establish whether a particular collector is registered as a waste carrier, you may wish to contact the Environment Agency general helpline on 0845 9333 111 who will be able to put you through to your local office. To establish if a collector is the operator of premises approved under the Animal By-Products Regulations, you may wish to contact your local Animal Health Office (in England these are Defra offices).

Any person who produces, imports, carries, keeps, treats or disposes of waste, or as a broker has control of such waste must also comply with the Waste - Duty of Care leaflet Adobe acrobat pdf file (217 KB).
