Animal by-products: Novel methods - guidance on novel disposal and treatment methods for animal by-products

The EU Animal By-Products Regulation allows for alternative means of disposal or use of animal by-products. These "novel methods" may only be used once they have been assessed by EFSA (the European Food Stafety Authority) and implemented in EU legislation.

The attached presentation Adobe acrobat pdf file (103 KB) outlines the process for applying for approval of a Novel Method. Note: where the presentation refers to "output material", this includes all by-products (e.g. steam, ash and waste-water) as well as the final product.

The European Commission has issued guidance for applications for new alternative methods of disposal or use of Animal By-Products under Regulation (EC) No 1774/2002 Adobe acrobat pdf file (274 KB).
