Animal by-products

Animal by-products (ABPs) are animal carcases, parts of carcases or products of animal origin that are not intended for human consumption. This includes catering waste, used cooking oil, former foodstuffs, butcher and slaughterhouse waste, blood, feathers, wool, hides and skins, fallen stock, pet animals, zoo and circus animals, hunt trophies, manure, ova, embryos and semen. Devolved administrations are responsible for ABP policy in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

13 November 2008 - The Consultation on the Review of the Animal By-Products Regulation (EC) No.1774/2002 was issued today.

23 September 2008 - Guidance on the approval of composting and biogas plants to treat category 3 animal by-products and/or catering waste under Regulation 208/2006, and approval of technical plants for the production of technical products under Regulation 208/2006 (PDF 100 KB).

9 July 2008 - Information on Animal By Products Rendering: Marking of rendered animal by-products with Glyceroltriheptanoate.

30 June 2008 - On 10 June 2008 the European Commission issued a proposal to replace the Animal By-Products Regulation 1774/2002/EC, which lays down health rules as regards animal by-products not intended for human consumption. Further information is available on the legislation page.
