BSE: Science & research - Other UK agencies funding TSE research

Most TSE research in the UK is supported by five public funders: the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Defra, the Department of Health (DH), the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and the Medical Research Council (MRC).

The 5 funders ensure their activities are coordinated through the UK TSE Research and Development Joint Funders Coordination Group. The aim of this group is to ensure information is exchanged and to prevent duplication of effort in research being funded within Government departments and research councils.

  • More information about the Joint Funders’ research programmes is available from the MRC: TSE research portfolio.
  • Also available is the UK Strategy for Research and Development on Human and Animal Health Aspects of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies 2005-2008.

The European Commission also funds TSE research.

Joint Funders’ spend

Research into TSE research has been funded since the 1980s in the UK. The graph below summarises the amount spent by each body.
