National Scrapie Plan: Voluntary Scrapie Flocks Scheme
The
Voluntary Scrapie Flocks Scheme (VSFS) was launched on 5 April 2004 and
was closed to applications on 31 March 2005. Applications will no longer
be accepted.
All eligible flock owners were sent an Expression of Interest letter
in December 2003, and an Application Pack in April 2004. To benefit from
the VSFS, a flock would have had a confirmed case of scrapie between 1
July 1998 and 19 July 2004. Four years is the maximum time for membership
of the VSFS.
The object of the scheme is to eliminate scrapie on historically affected holdings and prevent future outbreaks of the disease by only using sheep with scrapie resistant genotypes for breeding, and culling scrapie susceptible sheep. For more detailed information on this scheme, see the Voluntary Scrapie Flocks Scheme Booklet and Contract (NSP28).
GB enforcement legislation for compulsory European-wide measures in scrapie affected flocks, set out in Annex VII of EC Regulation 999/2001 as amended, came into effect in England and Scotland from 20 July 2004 (1 November 2004 for Wales). Any confirmed outbreak in VSFS flocks reported from these respective dates must be dealt with under the Compulsory Scrapie Flocks Scheme (CSFS).
