Q.1. Is information on BSE and CJD readily & rapidly available?
A. Yes. New information or research results on BSE are put rapidly into the public domain.
The Defra BSE Website, which is updated regularly, provides a wealth of information about the latest developments in BSE. The Statistics section gives the most up-to-date information on BSE case numbers and trends, collected on a weekly or monthly basis, and the Publications page lists and, where appropriate, gives links to, Defra’s publications on BSE which are available online or from Defra Publications or The Stationery Office.
The National CJD Surveillance Unit produces annual reports, copies of which are also placed in the Libraries of both Houses. In addition the Department of Health publishes monthly updates on its website.
The Food Standards Agency's BSE controls review website provides a great deal of information about BSE and how it is being controlled.
Q.2. Where can one obtain more information on BSE?
A. The Defra BSE website includes a contact us link for enquiries by e-mail. Alternatively, contact the Defra general enquiry helpline; telephone 0845 933 5577.
Q.3. What advice is being given to doctors?
A. All doctors are kept informed of the findings relating to the new variant of CJD. Neurologists can obtain advice from the CJD Unit in Edinburgh.
