Animal health & welfare strategy: Veterinary Services

The Vets and Vet Services Working Group

Over the past few years, Defra, the Scottish Government, Welsh Assembly Government, RCVS, BVA and NFU have held an on-going discussion on the challenges that face farm animal veterinary practices, particularly in remote areas. The Vets and Vet Services Working Group has been established as a forum for these discussions.

In July 2007, to bring external challenge to its work, Professor Philip Lowe was appointed as Chairman of the Working Group for a 12-month period.

Professor Lowe is heading the Working Group in identifying and focusing on key areas where it can make a real contribution. He has reviewed the Group’s ‘terms of reference’ and is chairing a set of five working group meetings with the following themes:

  • Vets as businesses (London – 12 November 2007)
  • Public Good functions and Rural vets (Inverness – 30 January 2008)
  • New Governance models in farming and food production – are they working? (Cardiff – 15 February 2008)
  • Long term issues – Future of the livestock industry (London – 27 June 2008)
  • Sumarise evidence provided/Communications Strategy (London – July 2008, date to be confirmed)

Professor Lowe will be providing a report to the Steering Group at the end of his appointment. The report will be published in Autumn 2008.

The Group is supported by a Secretariat provided by Defra.
