Promoting wider use of Farm Health Planning
Introduction
The project to promote wider use of farm health planning within the agricultural
industry is a key initiative under the Animal
Health and Welfare Strategy for Great Britain. The Strategy was developed
through lengthy consultations with interested parties throughout the farming
industry and during this process it became clear that farm health planning
was regarded as the best mechanism by which the health and welfare of
livestock can be addressed.
Farm health planning is not a new concept and the aim of this work-stream
is, by taking a partnership approach, to promote wider adoption of farm
health planning by all major livestock sectors as a basis for achieving
higher standards of animal health and welfare. The aims and activities
of this work are set out in the Action Plan on
Positive Animal Health, which was developed in consultation with a
broad range of interested parties within the farming industry.
Central to this is working in partnership with the farming industry,
and a Working Group composed of interested
parties from throughout the industry has been set up to take this forward.
In order to find out about the numbers of livestock keepers currently carrying out farm health planning activities, Defra commissioned ADAS to take a snapshot across a statistically representative sample of the five major food producing sectors in England. ADAS’ report An Independent Evidence Baseline for Farm Health Planning in England will be used to monitor progress on the uptake of farm health planning in the future.
